BREAKDOWN: Forced Marriage and Child Marriage in India

This summer, we are highlighting the various forms of modern slavery that are prevalent in India.


Bride trafficking is a worrying issue in India, and contributes to the wider challenge of forced marriage. Child brides are often victims of trafficking, and the effects of such coercion can be incredibly damaging. Note that there is a difference between arranged and forced marriages - read about the distinction, and the wider issues, in the breakdown below:



A key ingredient in the fight against bride trafficking is the empowerment of women, specifically the provision of education and employment opportunities. That's why we emphasise such opportunities in our overseas projects. Learn more about our approach here.
